Children's Literature Awards
American Indian Youth Literature Award (2006-present) An award given out by the American Indian Library Association to honor the writing and illustrating of children's literature by and about American Indians. Awards are given once every two years in the following categories: Best Picture Book, Best Middle School Book, and Best Young Adult Book.
Batchelder Award (1968-Present) The Batchelder Award is given each year to the most outstanding children's book published originally in a language other than English in a country outside of the U.S.
Boston Globe-Horn Book Award (1967-present) An award presented each year by three judges appointed by the Editor of the Horn Book Magazine (a prestigious publication that reviews children's literature). The three categories are Picture Book, Fiction and Nonfiction.
Caldecott Medal (1938-Present) The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the artist of the most outstanding American picture book for children.
Carnegie Medal (1936-present) Awarded once a year by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals to the writer of an outstanding children's book.
Coretta Scott King Book Award (1970-Present) The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given each year to the African American authors and illustrators whose children's and young adult books best demonstrate and affirm African American culture.
Golden Kite Award (1974-present) A series of awards given by the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators for outstanding children's literature in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text and Picture Book Illustration. NOTE: The SCBWI website no longer shows all of the past award recipients, but other sites (like Wikipedia) have full listings.
Jane Addams Children's Book Award (1953-present) An award given out by the Jane Addams Peace Association to children's books published each year that promote peace, social justice, and racial and gender equality.
National Book Award (1966-present) The National Book Foundation gives out four National Book Awards each year in recognition of outstanding literature created by a U.S. citizen. The category for children's and young adult literature has changed over the years (formerly Children's Books and other similar categories), but since 1996 has been named Young People's Literature.
Newbery Medal and Honor Books (1922-Present) The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." (ALSC website)
Pura Belpre Award (1996-Present) The Pura Belpre Award is given each year (ever other year from 1996-2008) to the Latino/Latina writer and illustrator for the most outstanding children's book celebrating Latino culture.
Geisel Award (2006-Present) The Geisel Award is given each year to the author and illustrator of the most outstanding beginning readers published in English in America.
